"Memory and Perception" is an exhibit that reveals how artists interpret the world around and within them. All artists integrate their life experiences into their artwork, consciously or unconsciously, often incorporating what they see and sense in the present with their memories of the past. The exhibit was juried by Alan Bamberger, internationally known art consultant, writer and art reviewer, located in San Francisco, CA. He chose 49 artists from across the nation who explore diverse subject matter, from childhood memories to captured moments in time. Visitors will see artwork in a wide array of mediums including photography, painting, fiber, sculpture and more.

My first video project "Elegy" was screened at the San Francisco Art Institute 9/28/17
Julie Alland’s Elegy is a visual poem and video essay about struggling to come to terms with the loss of her father. The video opens in silence with a stark, black and white image of smoke threading diagonally across the screen. It fades into a set of curtains blowing in the wind. Alland begins narrating the video by taking a deep breath. Her inhalation, coordinated with the curtains, creates a parallel between breathing and curtains buffeted by air. These images set the tone for the rest of the video.
Julie Alland uses a dark palette, chiaroscuro lighting and split screen to reflect on what it means to loose a parent to dementia, then death. Ghostly images of billowing curtains, airborne smoke and soap bubbles float throughout the video serving as metaphors for memory, absence, and grief.
We breathe air. Air is life. Air is invisible unless it interacts with something. Memories do not exist unless someone remembers. The dead inhabit our memories.

California Sculpture Slam
September 1 ~ October 29, 2017
San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
"Temporal Resolution #3" was selected by the jury • click images to enlarge
"California Sculpture SLAM offers a unique opportunity to see current works by both established and emerging sculptors. This year’s call for entries, without adherence to strict thematic guidelines, inspired an extraordinary collection of sculpture, nearly doubling the number of artist entries from the inaugural California Sculpture SLAM in 2011. Ranging from pedestal, to freestanding, to wall-mounted pieces, the 49 artworks in this exhibition were selected from 195 entries and include sculpture made from metal, wood, stone, glass, and fabric."

“The breadth and quality of the works submitted for this exhibition were so impressive,” says Cheryl White, director of Glass Wheel Studio. “Whether experimenting with the technical limits of the glass or using it to explore deeper conceptual themes, GAS member artists are pushing the boundaries of this material in fascinating ways. We cannot wait to showcase these artists in Norfolk."
